Graphic Design unit continues for 8th Grade

This week the 8th grade artists continued with their study of graphic design and careers in the field of graphic design. Students studied the principles of graphic design and explored career options in the field.

Also, students continued to work on their graduation cover designs for the Class of 2010.
Students explored themes of learning,the future,the journey,success,and achievement for their grad cover designs. Many students used both graphic symbols and pictorial symbols to express their concept or visual hook. In addition, students worked on page layout and composition as they inserted type and lines of copy for their finished work of art.

See Miss Lehrer in the art room for entry forms and information on the Downers Grove Junior Women's Club Junior High Art Contest open to 7th and 8th grade students in the district.
Entry forms are also posted on the walls of Lakeview hallways.

Also,remember to stop by the art room if you want to enter the Darien Woman's Club Fine Arts Scholarship.
Entries must be postmarked before April 7,2010.

Graphic Design Unit Begins and Class of 2010 Grad Cover Designs

This week the 8th grade artists started a unit on Graphic Design and careers in Advertising Arts.
In conjuction with this unit of study the 8th graders have a real-life advertising assignment.
They are in the process of brainstorming ideas for the cover design of the Class of 2010 Graduation Program Cover Design for commencement this year.

As part of this assignment students are using a strong focal point or center of interest,graphic and pictorial symbols,and unified type with their designs.

The 8th grade artists are using the elements of line,shape and space, in addition to the principles of dominance and contrast in their final work. Currently, each art student has begun their cover with a pencil layout and a line of copy or phrase to enhance their cover design.

Sculpture Unit coming to a close and Fine Arts Scholarship from the Darien Woman's Club

This week the 8th grade artists finished their sculpture projects. Students used various texture techniques with paint and explored the antique process for metal bas- relief sculpture.

In the area of art appreciation students learned about the life and work of 20th century sculptor named George Segal whose life-sized plaster sculptures are found in most major museums of contemporary art in the United States. We also explored Egyption Art and the design of masks as an art form.

In the area of community news: The Darien Woman's Club is sponsoring a Fine Arts Scholarship which is open to 7th -12th grade students in the community. The $350 Fine Arts Scholarship is awarded to two students for the 2010-2011 school year. It is to be used in the summer of 2010 for a class or camp in the area of fine arts.

Lakeview Jr.High artists win awards and recognition in community

This week the 8th grade artists continued to sculpt and paint their clay sculptures. Students used their knowledge of color theory and color mixing to begin the underpainting of their nature inspired clay sculptures. Some students also worked on bas-relief or low relief metal sculptures, as well.

Also,this week we have explored the art of masks in the world and their relationship to
bas-relief sculpture. Students created small imaginary mask drawings based on an inspiration source.

In the area of community news:

Congratulations to all the Lakeview artists who have won prize ribbons this year at the annual Darien Women's Club Art Contest.

For the 8th grade the winner was: Jessica Stacko

For the 7th grade the winners were: Jack Herstowski, Nicole Wroblewski, Angie Martino, and Vaishnavi Pernenkil

For the 6th grade the winners were: Micah Giffey and Tyler Jankowski

Also, Angie Martino's artwork was selected to be exhibited professionally at the Indian Prairie Library through the month of March.

Thank you to all the other Lakeview artists who exhibited their beautiful artwork at this exciting art contest this year!


Also, congratualtions to the five 7th grade artists from Lakeview who had their outstanding drawings exhibited at the Downers Grove South Freshman Orientation this year, in addition to the collaborative "Emerging Artists" addition to the DGS Winter Art Show this year with Lakeview Jr.High and other Junior high schools in the area.

The students from Lakeview who were exhibited at the Freshman orientation at DGS High School were the following emerging artists: Nicole Wroblewski ,April Wendling,Jennifer Shi,Samantha Cho, and Serenity Stapleton.
