Color Theory Unit and Color Schemes artwork

This week the 6th grade artists continued to work on their color schemes unit of study. We began the unit with a complementary color scheme which uses opposite colors on the color wheel such as blue and orange,red and green and purple and violet. These color combinations give greatest contrast to the viewer and create an illusion of visual excitement in a work of art.

Next, students learned about analogous colors or color families and started a symmetrical design in cool colors such as blue,green and violet with neutral accents. The third design is based on a warm color scheme and requires the use of red,orange,yellow and intermediate colors that can be found between the primary and secondary colors. The next creative assignment is to create a neutral design with drafting tools such as circle templates and rulers.
Each student must use brown,grey,white and black to create their neutral work of art.

This week the 6th grade artists are concentrating on the color wheel and the relationship of colors.

We are studying analogous color schemes which are used to create a mood in paintings and art in general. Students are creating a variety of symmetrical designs based on opposite colors on the color wheel which are called complementary colors. In addition,we have started a project on cool colors which are also analogous in nature.

Students will begin to develp an awareness of the relationship to color schemes in textiles,clothing,interior design,animation and film.

6th grade Watercolor Unit and Recognition for Lakeview artists

This week most 6th grade artists completed their Illinois inspired watercolor landscape paintings. Students worked very hard and enjoyed experimenting with a variety of experimental and traditional watercolor painting techniques used by professionals in the field.

In addition, the 6th graders tried to incorporate the concept of linear perspective in their imaginative and colorful Chicago seascapes,cityscapes and Illinois scenes. Many landscapes incoporated state symbols such as the monarch butterfly,cardinal bird,or violet flowers for a more authentic realistic look to their work.

In the area of color theory students are learning how to paint a comprehensive color wheel with the introduction of primary,secondary,and intermediate colors. We have also discussed the use of complementary and analogous colors in advertising,interior design,and painting.

For our art history and art appreciation unit this week we have explored the life and work of the
painter known as Vincent Van Gogh. This 19th century artist was known for his very expressive use of color schemes and complementary color relationships in his work.

6th Grade continues with Watercolor unit

This week the 6th grade artists continued to paint their Illinois inspired landscape and seascape watercolor paintings.
Students used the concept of the three parts of a landscape to create the illusion of linear perspective in their work.

Also, each student is using a variety of new watercolor techniques to enhance their realistic illusion through the watercolor medium. Students are using drybrush,wet-in-wet,graded wash ,salt resist, and a variety of new techniques to emphasize a facet of nature in their paintings.

Recently, students completed a unit on 1- point perspective,geometric solids,linear perspective and the shading a cube.
Some samples of this one- point perspective work can be found on this blog.

Students have used this prior knowledge to help make their landscapes and cityscapes look more realistic and three-dimensional in nature.

6th grade Watercolor Unit continues and Community Art News

This week the 6th grade artists continued with their Watercolor Painting unit and Color Theory unit. Students have been exploring the symbols of the state of Illinois in their exploration of the watercolor medium. They have completed various preliminary worksheets in painting techniques.

Students have begun to learn a variety of watercolor techniques such as graded wash,wet-in-wet,drybrush,flat wash, and wax resist method painting. Students will employ these diverse techniques in their Illinois inspired landscape or seascape painting.

In the area of art appreciation and art history students have also learned about the wonderful paintings and drawings done by the famous 19th century artist named Winslow Homer who dealt with many wonderful images of the sea. He is known for unique images of man against the forces of nature in his paintings of the New England seacoast.

Lakeview 7th grade artist Samantha Cho will be presented with her prize and award this Tues.May 4th at Lakeview Jr.High from one of the directors of the Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club Junior High Art Contest. Samantha's artwork won top honors for this community art contest!

In addition, Lakeview artists Samantha Cho,Angie Martino,Marwa Choudry,and Jessica Stacko all had their winning artwork displayed professionally by the Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club at the Downers Grove Public Library.

We are all excited about their success as young emerging artists in the community!

6th Grade artists begin Watercolor Painting Unit and Color Theory

This week the 6th grade students continued with their Watercolor and Color Theory unit of study. Each student has selected an Illinois landscape or Illinois symbol to depict in a realistic landscape or seascape. Students are using the concept of foreground,middleground,and background to give the illusion of space and depth.

In additon, students are using their imagination to introduce additional pictorial elements to complete their Illinois inspired landscape or cityscape of Chicago. To enhance their knowledge of watercolor we have begun to talk about color theory and watercolor techniques in the early stages of exploration of this exciting area of art.

Lakeview Artists win top awards at community art contest

This week the 6th grade art students continued with their unit on perspective and architecture. Students finished the shading and rendering of their cube in One-Point Perspective. Each 6th grade artist used three different values and created a cast shadow. Shading techniques were practiced before completion of each perspective rendering.

The 6th grade artists also learned about the fascinating life and work of Renaissance artist Leonardo Da Vinci,in addition to the early life and career of visionary architect Frank Lloyd Wright of the modern period of Architecture.

Several Lakeview artists won top prize awards at the annual Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club this year. From the 7th grade Samantha Cho,Angie Martino,and Marwa Choudry won top honors and Jessica Stacko was selected for a top award from the 8th grade at Lakeview.

These Lakeview artists will have their 2D and 3D works of art professionally exhibited at the Downers Grove Public Library during May for all to enjoy.

6th Grade Artist work on their Perspective Drawings

This week the 6th grade artists continued to work on their One- Point Perspective multi-colored drawings. Students have created a cube with the use of a vanishing point,orthagonals,a light source and a sense of dimension through value and shading.

In addition,students have studied the life and work of the Renaissance artist named Leondardo da Vinci who invented linear perspective and the use of light and shadow in his paintings and drawings. Students have viewed the many artistic creations and amazing inventions of this visionary artist and inventor of the Renaissance Period of Art in Italy.

Thank you to all the Lakeview 7th and 8th grade artists who have entered their clay sculpture and drawings in the annual Downers Grove Junior High Art Contest of 2010 sponsored by the Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club.

Perspective Unit begins and contest news

This week the 6th grade art classes started their unit on One-Point Perspective. Students are learning how to transform a geometric shape into a geometric solid. Each student is using the principle of linear perspective to transform a square into a cube.

The students are learning many new terms related to the use of perspective,shading and the light and shadow system.

Students are also using the concept of value and cast shadow to bring out the
three-dimensional illusion in their cube.

Congratulations goes to Rebecca Martinez who has been selected as the winner of the Class of 2010 Grad Cover Design contest at Lakeview.

6th Grade Arts begin art appreciation unit on Elements and Principles

This week the 6th grade artists began a unit on the Elements and Principles of Art. The students are learning about elements such as line,shape,form,color,value,space,and texture and their relationship to a work of art

Also, students have begun to learn the many Principles of Art which include unity,balance,rhythm,proportion,dominance,contrast,movement and pattern.

We are exploring the relationship of these principles to the creation of a work of art.

In addition, we have started to analyze how an element or principle of art is used in a major work of art.

3rd Trimester begins with 6th grade Art

This week the 6th grade students started art class. We began this week with an imaginary drawing that could have elements of realism. Students used their imagination to create an image that was of importance to them.
In addition, we began our unit on cartooning and cartooning techniques. Students drew various cartoon images with an interactive video. The students were very successful in their first drawing experiences.

This week the 8th grade artists continued with their study of graphic design and careers in the field of graphic design. Students studied the principles of graphic design and explored career options in the field.

Also, students continued to work on their graduation cover designs for the Class of 2010.
Students explored themes of learning,the future,the journey,success,and achievement for their grad cover designs. Many students used both graphic symbols and pictorial symbols to express their concept or visual hook. In addition, students worked on page layout and composition as they inserted type and lines of copy for their finished work of art.

Graphic Design Unit Begins and Class of 2010 Grad Cover Designs

This week the 8th grade artists started a unit on Graphic Design and careers in Advertising Arts.
In conjuction with this unit of study the 8th graders have a real-life advertising assignment.
They are in the process of brainstorming ideas for the cover design of the Class of 2010 Graduation Program Cover Design for commencement this year.

As part of this assignment students are using a strong focal point or center of interest,graphic and pictorial symbols,and unified type with their designs.

The 8th grade artists are using the elements of line,shape and space, in addition to the principles of dominance and contrast in their final work. Currently, each art student has begun their cover with a pencil layout and a line of copy or phrase to enhance their cover design.

Sculpture Unit coming to a close and Fine Arts Scholarship from the Darien Woman's Club

This week the 8th grade artists finished their sculpture projects. Students used various texture techniques with paint and explored the antique process for metal bas- relief sculpture.

In the area of art appreciation students learned about the life and work of 20th century sculptor named George Segal whose life-sized plaster sculptures are found in most major museums of contemporary art in the United States. We also explored Egyption Art and the design of masks as an art form.

In the area of community news: The Darien Woman's Club is sponsoring a Fine Arts Scholarship which is open to 7th -12th grade students in the community. The $350 Fine Arts Scholarship is awarded to two students for the 2010-2011 school year. It is to be used in the summer of 2010 for a class or camp in the area of fine arts.

Lakeview Jr.High artists win awards and recognition in community

This week the 8th grade artists continued to sculpt and paint their clay sculptures. Students used their knowledge of color theory and color mixing to begin the underpainting of their nature inspired clay sculptures. Some students also worked on bas-relief or low relief metal sculptures, as well.

Also,this week we have explored the art of masks in the world and their relationship to
bas-relief sculpture. Students created small imaginary mask drawings based on an inspiration source.

Congratulations to all the Lakeview artists who have won prize ribbons this year at the annual Darien Women's Club Art Contest.

For the 8th grade the winner was: Jessica Stacko

For the 7th grade the winners were: Jack Herstowski, Nicole Wroblewski, Angie Martino, and Vaishnavi Pernenkil

For the 6th grade the winners were: Micah Giffey and Tyler Jankowski

Also, Angie Martino's artwork was selected to be exhibited professionally at the Indian Prairie Library through the month of March.

Also, congratualtions to the five 7th grade artists from Lakeview who had their outstanding drawings exhibited at the Downers Grove South Freshman Orientation this year, in addition to the collaborative "Emerging Artists" addition to the DGS Winter Art Show this year with Lakeview Jr.High and other Junior high schools in the area.

The students from Lakeview who were exhibited at the Freshman orientation at DGS High School were the following emerging artists: Nicole Wroblewski ,April Wendling,Jennifer Shi,Samantha Cho, and Serenity Stapleton.

Sculpture Unit Continues and Exciting Community Art Contest!

This week the 8th grade artists continued to create bas-relief clay and metal sculptures,in addition to in-the round sculptures. Students are using the elements of form and invented texture to create their sculptural works of art based on the theme of nature.

We have been also discussing the many exciting course options at the Downers Grove South High School. Many Lakeview students have expressed interest in several of the entry level courses and now have a clearer understanding of ceramics and sculpture. We have also explored the concept of throwing on the wheel as well as handbuilt clay pottery and sculpture.

This year several Lakeview art students were exhibited at DGS during the freshman orientation as part of our collaborative Emerging Artists exhibition at the Downers Grove South High which was part of the DGS Winter art show.

The Downers Grove Junior Woman's Club is currently sponsoring its annual Junior High Contest which is open to 7th and 8th grade students at Lakeview and District 58. Entires are due April 7,2010 and will be picked up from Lakeview Jr.High.

Sculpture Unit Begins for 8th grade artists and new Art Contest!

This week students have been creating color drawings related to the theme of nature to be used in the creation of a sculpture project in either clay or metal. Students are using realistic pictures and nature photos to create this drawing.

Students have also practiced their drawing skills by trying an experience in the creation of cartoon animals.

Students have begun to learn about the different methods of handbuilt clay sculpture and the concept of both projections and recessions in a either a clay or metal bas-relief.

Any student entering their artwork in the Darien Women's Club Art Contest should remember to bring their pre-registered artwork to the Eisenhower Jr.High on Friday,January 29,2010 between 4:30-6:30.

Object Rendering and Downers Grove Jr.High Art Contest news...

This week the 8th grade artists continued working on their object renderings. Students have used a value scale and have tried to indicate the illusion of photgraphic realism in their work.

We have also explored the life and work of two realistic artists named Rembrandt and Caravaggio and their dramatic use of light and shadow in their paintings and drawings.

In the area of community news there is another new exciting art contest open to Lakeview 7th and 8th grade artists.

The Downers Grove Junior Women's Club is sponsoring its annual Jr.High Art Contest which is open to only 7th grade and 8th grade students in District 66 and District 58.

Any 2-D or 3-D work of art may be entered.

Object Rendering unit continues

This week the 8th grade artists have begun their object rendering drawings. Currently, students have completed a value scale with a full range of values from dark to light. Also, students have begun a preliminary layout of their magazine photo. The goal in this assignment is the representation of two or more textures on a two-dimensional surface.

In the area of art history, we will study the life and work of the Baroque artist of the 17th-18th century named Caravaggio,who was a master of light and shadow.

In the area of community involvement,some Lakeview students have begun to prepare their artwork for the annual Darien Women's Club Art Contest. This art contest is open to any 6th,7th,or 8th grade student. Both 2-D and 3-D works of art can be entered in this exciting community art show.

Hand Drawing Unit comes to a close

This week the 8th grade artists finalized their hand drawings. Students used a range of values and texture to complete their work. Several students will be submitting their hand drawings to the annual Darien Women's Club Art Contest this year.

In addition, the 8th grade has explored portrait drawing and has completed a short worksheet on facial features and shading the face.

Currently, students are selecting photos to render for our next unit called Object Rendering. Each student must select an interesting photo with two or more unique and different textures.

In the area of community news, the Darien Womens' Club is sponsoring their annual art contest which is open to 6th,7th,and 8th grade artists.

Lakeview Artists Exhibited at DGS Winter Show

This week the 8th grade artists have continued with the drawing of their hands. They are using various shading techniques and some computer generated images for their work.

In addition,this week we have reviewed various types of perspective and the Elements and Principles of Art.

Several Lakeview artists have had their drawings exhibited side by side DGS High school artwork this year as part of the Annual Winter Show and Music Concert at the high school this week. Lakeview students have been recognized as new emerging artists.

8th Grade Art begins

This week was the start of 2nd trimester art for the 8th grade.

We have begun a short review of the elements of art and their relationship to realistic drawing.
Each 8th grade artist is creating a reflective hand drawing of their own hand. Students have the option of incorporating a small hand held inanimate object in their hand. This object should relect an interest,hobby, or future aspiration. In addition, students may choose to incorporate an object in the distance by using the concept of linear perspective in their work.

Students are using the elements of line,shape,form,value,and texture in their drawing.

As part of this unit we have reviewed the life and work of the realistic painter and illustrator known as Norman Rockwell. This artist used many facial gestures as well as expressive hand images in his work.

Also,this year some Lakeview 7th grade artists have been selected to be exhibited with the work of Downers Grove South High School students for their Winter Art Show which begins December 2009. Although Lakeview has numerous outstanding talented students,this year we were given the opportunity to exhibit 5 outstanding 2D works of art from the 7th grade.

This year Nicole Wroblewski,April Wendling,Jennifer Shi,Samantha Cho,and Serenity Stapleton will have their drawings displayed with DGS artists at the Downers Grove South High School gallery space in the annual Winter Art Show.

The 7th grade artists had a two day week which ended the trimester. The students took home their scratchboard drawings,still-life drawings and Pop Art inspired works of art to share with their families over the Thanksgiving Break.

In the area of community news and involvement:

Several 7th grade art students will have the opportunity to exhibit their drawings this year at the Downers Grove South Winter Art Show which will be a collaborative art exhibit this year. Five Lakeview art students will be selected and will have the opportunity to exhibit their work with DGS art students as an emerging artists in the community. Scratchboard Unit continues and Pop Art Unit has ended

This week students have completed their pattern and transfer step to begin the scatchboard process. Students are using nature themes and the elements of line and texture to complete their exciting scratchboard designs.

Students have viewed scratchboard examples and have seen a more advanced process of scratchboard at the professional level.

The 7th grade has also finished all their Pop Art mixed media drawings and are now taking them home to display with their pencil still-life work. Samples of these works will soon be shown on the district website gallery for viewing.

Also, sample 7th grade still-life drawings can be viewed in the Lakeview small showcase near the art and music rooms.

The students are finalizing their Pop Art drawings. Many students have completed their final Pop Art design and some samples of recent 7th grade artwork can be viewed shortly.

Pop Art Unit Continues

The 7th grade artists are busy transposing a small comic frame to a large scale enlargement.
Students are using the concept of a grid for measurements and enlargement to scale.

The students are also selecting stencils and are using guidelines to create a large word or type in a speech balloon in the style of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Students are learning about horizonatal and vertical page formats and the use of a layout.

Once the pencil layout has been created student artists have begun their experimentation with a crayon and marker resist method to re-create the look of photo silk screen images which were used by artists such as Andy Warhol.

Sudents are using bright colors and often neon or flourescent colors to reflect the work of Warhol and a fellow artist named Roy Lichtenstein of the Modern period of art.

Still-Life Unit ends and Pop Art Unit Begins for 7th Grade

This week students put their final touches on their realistic still-life drawings.

Students created a variety of compositions using both geometric solids as well as fruits,vegetables,and other household objects made of diverse textures and materials.

Also, this week we began a major unit on Pop Art and the use of a grid in layout and design.
For our art history unit we have studied the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein who were two very important Pop artists of the Modern Period of art history.

Students will be creating a blow-up or enlargement of a small comic and will transpose the image on to a much larger scale in the style of the Pop art movement of the l960's.

Students are learning about type,guidelines,lettering styles, and composition formats as they transpose their comic into a Pop Art work of art.

This week the 7th grade artists continued with their still-life drawings and their study of realism,in additon to light and shadow.

For our art history unit students have studied the work of three Post Impressionists who worked with value and color in their work. We have explored the interesting life and artwork of Paul Cezanne,Paul Seurat,and Vincent Van Gogh who worked during the 19th -20th century in France.

Also, near the end of this week we have begun a unit on Pop Art and the relationship to the comic and comic strip in advertising. Students will be transposing small full-color comics into large blow-up images much like the work of Pop artist Andy Warhol and the Pop artist named Roy Lichtenstein of the l960s.

Still-Life Compositions come to life and artist Caravaggio

This week the 7th grade is working on their shading techniques on their Still- Life compositions.

Students are selecting still life objects to draw or working from a still-life set-up in the art room. Each student is using a full range of values from black to pale gray to enhance their work.

Students have explored the concept of both "additive drawing" and "subtractive drawing." In addition, students have been using various erasers to practice the subtractive technique of drawing to create both sharp and soft highlights on their objects. Also, students are starting to show texture or surface quality of the objects in their still-life.

We are also studying the life and work of the famous Italian Baroque artist named Caravaggio from the 17th-18th century who as a master of dramatic lighting,deep shadows and compositions that emotionally involve the viewer in the work.

This week the 7th grade will practice and review pastel shading techniques that can be used in renderings or still-life drawings as well.

Still-Life and Realism unit continues

This week students continued to work on their still-life layouts and finished drawings. Students have been using various shading techniques and have incorported the concept of overlap and linear perspective in their work.

The 7th grade artists have practiced shading geometric forms with several gradations in value.
Students have also used the elements of line,shape,form,space and texture in their artistic compositions. Also, in conjunction with this unit on realism and value we have explored the life and work of the 20th century American artist named Norman Rockwell. He is best known for his realistic illustrations and covers for The Saturday Evening Post. He frequently created compositions with props and photographs and incorporated a still-life about everyday life in his work which had universal appeal to his audience.

Still-Life,Color Layering,and special effects in shading

This week the 7th grade artists have reviewed and created a value scale in a color and shades of gray to be used in the creation of a finished still-life drawing. We have also reviewed the basic geometric solids and shapes,in addition to their relationship to blocking in a form for a still-life composition.

Students are drawing from still-life set-ups of wooden geometric solids,everyday objects,and organic forms such as fruits and vegetables. Students also learned the technique of color layering with colored pencils which lends itself to the rendering of still-life organic forms.

Also, the 7th grade artists have studied the life and work of the 17th century Dutch artist known as Rembrandt. This artist was a master of realism plus light and dark in his artwork. Rembrandt also created mood and emotion with his use of "hidden lighting" which had the effect of a spotlight on the subject or focal point of a painting.

Value Unit continues for the 7th grade

This week students began a series of value exercises in various types of media.
These exercises are part of the unit on Still-Life drawing. We have started a value scale in pencil which will be added to the final still-life drawing.

Students are also learning about the life and work of the French artist named Paul Cezanne of the 19th - 20th century. Cezanne is considered the father of modern art and is very well-known for his unique realistic still-life compositions.

Students are busy practicing a variety of shading techniques with colored pencils,shading pencils and crayons in their exploration of value.

The 7th grade artists completed all their contour line shoe drawings this week. They used accentuated contour lines to show form and a 3-dimensional illusion.

Each student selected an interesting shoe or sneaker to draw. They included the Elements of Art such as texture,shape,color and expressive line quality in their drawings.

Examples of student drawings can be viewed in the small showcase and in the art room at Lakeview. Also, color examples can be viewed on this blog and will soon be posted to the Lakeview web gallery site for viewing and enjoyment.

This week we have also begun a unit on value and shading techniques of organic forms such as fruit. This week we have worked on worksheets dealing with a review of geometric solids and shading in colored pencil.

7th Grade Contour Line Shoe drawing unit

This week students were busy working on the final touches of their reflective contour line shoe drawings. Students have made great effort to show their texture and special details of their shoe.

Various examples of 7th grade drawings can be viewed in the small showcase by the lockers and in the art room.

Students also assisted in the preparation,matting and display of the work in the art room at Lakeview.

In additon, when all students have completed their shoe drawings a small team of student artists will assist in the digital photography and computer presentation of student artwork for the Art Room Blog and the Lakeview Jr.High District web gallery space which is refreshed with each new series of student art submissions.

Contour Line Unit continues-7th Grade Art

This week the 7th grade artists are busy working on their reflective and very expressive shoe drawings. Students are using their actual shoe as they draw from direct observation of a form. Some students have begun to enhance their drawings with an imaginary background to express a mood or something further about their world.

Each student is using the elements of line, form,color texture and value to make their shoe look both realistic and 3-dimensional. In addition, the 7th grade artists are employing the art principles of contrast to show texture and proportion,as they draw their shoe to scale.

In addition, students have learned about the principle of dominance and they are giving emphasis through the use of contour lines. These contour lines are accentuated lines that are used to make a 2-D drawing look three-dimensional in nature.

Also, connections to the world of animation,cartooning,and especially action comic book hereos have been displayed and explored in class from Marvel comics.

1st Trimester 7th grade classes begin

For the 1st Trimester the 7th grade art students have reviewed the Elements of Art and the Principles of Art this week. Students have participated in art appreciation activities that integrate the terms or concepts with famous works of art.

In addition, the 7th grade students have begun a unit on the concept of contour line. Students are currently drawing a contour line study of their shoe in art class. Students will be integrating the concept of line,shape,form,color,value, and texture in their completed works of art.

Also, this week students will practice their cartooning and shading techniques with an interactive cartoon drawing video. Students will have the opportunity to create geometric solids and some advanced objects with the addition of value. The concept of accentuated line will be stressed in this work.

This week students have been learning about color schemes and advanced watercolor techniques. In addition, 6th grade students have created various unique designs that show warm colors, cool colors,complementary colors,and neutral colors. Students will be bringing their finished matted watercolors home this week. The matted work is suitable for professional framing and display.

Watercolor Painting unit closes

This week Lakeview artists finished their Illinois inspired landscape watercolor paintings.

Students used various techniques to transpose a photo to the medium of painting. After practice sessions on test strips, students tried the wet-in-wet technique,graded washes,salt resist,wax resist,flat washes and drybrush technique to enhance the elements of texture and value in their works of art.

In addition, this past week we further explored the concept of color theory. Students worked on analogous color schemes with cool,warm,and complementary color schemes on their design worksheets.

Also, in the area of art history and art appreciation we studied the life and work of famous 19th-20th century painter named Winslow Homer. This American watercolor artist was best known for his landscape and seascape watercolors and oil paintings that frequently depicted the forces of nature and man's struggle with nature. Many outstanding examples of this artist's beautiful work can be viewed at the Art Institute of Chicago.

This week the 6th grade artists painted their Illinois watercolor landscapes,seascapes or cityscapes.

Students have watched classroom demonstrations on several watercolor techniques and color mixing methods. Each student is required to incorporate three or more watercolor techniques in their Illinois painting. The 6th grade is using graded washes, wet-in-wet washes, salt resist, wax resist, sponge textures, and drybrush to bring out the nature of the state of Illinois.

We have explored the color wheel through the mixing of secondary and intermediate colors,in addition to tints and neutral colors.Students have created compositions based on the use of foreground,middleground,and background or the divisions of a landscape to enhance their illusion of space and linear perspective.

This week the 6th grade artists have been learning how to paint a color wheel in the watercolor medium.

Students have learned how to paint primary colors,secondary colors and intermediate colors in proper position on the color wheel.

In addition,we will cover tints and shades and the neutral colors.
Students will learn various watercolor painting techniques and experimental techniques to enhance their painting project.

Our theme is an Illinois inspired landscape or seascape that shows a sense of distance and space through linear perspective and value.

For our art appreciation unit we will explore the life and work of American realist artist Norman Rockwell who was know for his illustrations,drawings,and paintings of American scenes of everyday life.

This week students have continued with their study of perspective. The 6th grade artists have finalized their colored pencil geometric solid drawing in one-point perspective.

Also,students have begun their unit on color theory and painting.

Currently, students are creating pencil layouts and sketches for their Illinois landscape painting which will be completed in the watercolor medium. Students will be using various Illinois state symbols in the creation of their layout which will use the concept of linear perspective and space.

6th Grade Architecture and Community Artist-in-Residence this week!

This week the 6th grade artists continued with their drawing of a cube in 1 pt.perspective.

Students are using architectural vocabulary to label their drawing. In addition, students are using colored pencils to add value to their drawing and a cast shadow under a light source. The 6th grade has learned about the concept of linear perspective through an understanding of orthagonals,the horizon line, vanishing points,shadows and parallel lines.

In addition, this week we have begun the study of the life and work of American architect named Frank Lloyd Wright who was an extremely important modern artist of the 19th-20th century. Wright has left his mark around the world,as well as in many locations in the Midwest.

In the area of community news, this past week Mrs.Wendling, a 6th grade parent and practicing architect in the community discussed her residential and contract architectural work.

The 6th grade students who viewed her work really enjoyed her exciting visual presentation!!!!
She also talked about her education and training and the life of an architect.

Perspective unit begins and Lakeview Jr.High community art contest winners!

This week the 6th grade has begun their unit on perspective and architecture.

Students have started to learn about the various types of perspective,important terms,and have learned about connections in the everyday world to architecture and architectural drawings.

In addition, we have explored the life of 15th century artist Leonardo Da Vinci and his inventions. In class we have connected his invention of the concept of linear perspective and his use of light and shadow with realistic drawing and painting today.

Students have begun to draw a cube in one point perspective so that they can make it look real or 3-dimensional when they shade it next week.

Recently,samples of matted 6th grade surrealistic photomontage drawings and collages can be viewed in the small showcase by the lockers near the music and art rooms.

Next week we plan to have an artist-in-residence guest speaker who is a practicing architect in the community and 6th grade parent,as well.

We look forward to this exciting presentation in the art room next week!

Tosha Kadakia and Alison Maslar for their winning artwork in the area of scratchboard design and pencil rendering.

They will receive awards on Tues.April28 at 7:30 PM in the Lincoln Center Auditorium and their artwork will be professionally exhibited in the community.

Surrealism Unit comes to a close

This week the 6th grade students have been working on their surrealistic drawings. Students tried the technique of rubbings,collage,photomontage and realistic shading for this unit. Each student employed textures through rubbings and used a horizon line to delineate space in their work to give the illusion of linear perspective.

Students have also learned about the modern artists named M.C.Escher and
Rene Magritte who used many surrealistic techniques in their work.

In addition, the 6th grade artists have been reviewing connections between the relationship of surrealism to computer art and computer animation.

This week the 6th grade art students continued to learn more about the various Elements and Principles of Art and their relationship to the creation of a work of art.

For our art history and art appreciation unit of study,students have completed a reading and worksheet on the modern Dutch artist named M.C.Escher who is widely known for his transformation images and unique illusions in perspective. Students are also using their knowledge and background in surrealism to create a photomontage with transformation images such as in the work of Dali,Magritte,and Escher.

This week the 6th grade has begun their Surrealistic unit of study. Students are creating a photomontage composition with a hand drawn image integrated into the compositon.

This week the 6th grade art students have been studying the elements of art. The students have also begun to explore famous paintings and their relationship to the elements of art.

The 3rd Trimester Art Begins for 6th Grade

This is the first week of the 3rd trimester at Lakeview Junior High for the 6th grade students. We have begun our Drawing unit and introduction to our Elements of Art unit, as well.

Students have created an imaginary drawing using one or more of the Elements of Art in their work such as line, shape, color, value, texture, and space. In addition,each student wrote a description of their artistic theme and discussed their use of an element of art in their work.

Also, this week we started our cartooning unit which is explored throughout the trimester since this enhances drawing skills.

For this last week of 2nd trimester, the 8th grade students have been involved in a graphic design and advertising arts unit of study.

Students are completing the final details on the Class of 2009 Graduation program cover.

This work will be evaluated as a graphic design assignment, as well as an entry in the annual Grad Cover Design art contest at Lakeview Jr.High.

Also, this week we will begin an overview of the concept of logo design,trademarks,and symbols in art.

Students will begin some creative exercises in this area of study.

Examples of 8th grade gold metal scratchboard images and a variety of clay sculpture is currently on display in the small showcase area by the hallway lockers.

In addition, a variety of 8th grade drawings and clay sculpture will soon be included in the web gallery for the Lakeview Jr.High website for viewing.

Graphic Design Unit continues

This week the 8th grade art students have been working on their design of a graduation cover design for the 8th Grade Commencement in June.

Students have used graphic symbols that express learning,achievement,the future,and life at Lakeview Jr.High School in their designs.

The art principles of unity,contrast,proportion and dominance have been stressed in this unit of study. In addition, students have used different fonts or typefaces to enhance their designs with a message,quote or inspirational phrase.
For our art appreciation unit, we have begun to explore the life and work of the 20th century
Dutch artist known as Mondrian who is considered to be one of the artists that has greatly influenced architecture,industrial design and graphic arts due to his use of abstraction from nature and simplification of an idea.

Sculpture unit ends and Graphic Design unit begins for 8th grade art

This past week students have completed painting details on their clay sculpture and have done some finishing touches on their work.

In addition, 8th grade art students have started their unit on advertising arts and graphic design. Students are learning about the principles of good graphic design in the creation of a program cover for the upcoming 8th Grade commencement ceremony.

This is an exciting real-life application of their knowledge of design,typefaces, and pictorial symbols. The students will be using principles such as unity,repetition,contrast and emphasis in the design of their program cover.

In addition, the 8th grade students are using various inspiration sources from their internet research to create a preliminary rough layout for their design. This rough pencil layout will be the basis for a final graduation cover design for the June commencement at Lakeview Jr.High School in June of 2009.

This week the 8th grade art students have been finalizing their clay and metal sculptures in class. Students have explored various painting techniques such as stippling,drybrush, and the use of glazes on their clay sculptures.

We have also briefly experimented with impressionsitic style techniques.

For art appreciation this week,we will continue to view and discuss the exciting sculptural work of the 2oth century sculptor named George Segal who is best known for his plaster life-size sculptures of people in everyday settings.

8th Grade Sculpture Unit continues

This week the 8th grade artists created clay sculptures and began bas-relief metal or clay works of art.

Students have also explored the life of the French sculptor named Auguste Rodin who worked during both the 19th and 20th centuries. He is most well known for his works dealing with the human form and is well-known for his in-the round sculpture known as
"The Thinker."

In addition, we have begun to discuss the work of the contemporary sculptor named George Segal who is best known for his life-size plaster cast studies of the human form in every day settings. His works usually are open to a lot of interpretation due to the social impact and mood of his work.

We have also begun to review color theory and color painting techniques for clay and craft works of art.

Clay Sculpture Drawings and Darien Women's Club Art Contest news

This week Lakeview art students have been busy using the internet and library books to find information on a nature subject to use for inspiration for their clay sculpture project.

Students are drawing out their concept or idea for a bas-relief or in-the-round sculpture project in the medium of clay. Each student will enhance their sculpture by using the element of texture and realistic color to represent their theme.

In the area of community news, art students should bring in their artwork this Friday Jan.23,2009 between 4:30 and 6:30 only to the Eisenhower Jr.High School Commons Room for the Darien Women's Club Creative Youth Art Fair of 2009.

Remember, only works of art that have been pre-registered can be exhibited in this show. Details about this exciting community art event are posted throughout the Lakeview Jr.High hallways by the two art display showcases.

Darien Women's Art Contest Reminder and Realsim unit is finalized

This week we have been finalizing the realistic object renderings.

Students are also involved in the matting and presentation of their artwork for display purposes.

The 8th grade classes have also explored the basics of clay sculpture this week through the use of art appreciation videos and samples of clay works of art and pottery. We have reviewed the basic techniques of throwing on the pottery wheel and techniques for handbuilt clay sculpture.

We have also discussed the many ceramics and art class offerings at the Downers Grove South High School in preparation for High School registration and orientation.

In the are the area of community news, the Darien Women's Club is still accepting art entries for the annual Youth Art Fair Contest if the entry form is dropped off at the Indian Prairie Library by this Sat.January17,2009.

ENTRY FORMS AND CONTEST GUIDELINES ARE POSTED IN THE ART WING HALLWAYS AND ARE IN THE ART ROOM.

This event will be held Jan.23,24,and 25th at the Eisenhower Jr.High School.

Students are also asked to show community support for local military personnel through donations of needed items in collection baskets on drop off days at the Eisenhower Jr.High Art Exhibit sponsored by the Darien Women's Club.

For this week the 8th grade art students are learing about values scales and are working on their object renderings with a variety of shading pencils as part of their realsim unit.

Each student has selected an interesting photograph to render in detail that shows two or more different textures or surface qualities.

Also, as part of this unit we will review the life of the famous Dutch artist known as Rembrandt who was a master of realism and dramatic light and shadow effects.

In the area of community involvement, any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student interested in entering their 2-D or 3-D artwork in the annual Darien Women's Club Creative Youth Fair Art Contest should see Miss Lehrer in the artroom to pick up a registration form and get help with matting your work for the display.

Reflective Hand Drawings and Realism unit

This week the 8th grade artist students have been working on their reflective hand drawings. They are using the elements of art and various shading techniques.

Students have tried to express some personal thought in their drawings through symbols, background elements, and a photomontage effect in some works.

Also, students are reviewing the elements and principles of art and how they relate to the creation of two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art.

2nd Trimester 8th Grade Art Classes begin

This week the 8th grade started their unit on drawing and realism in art. We started to review the basic geometric solids,shading and the concept of "blocking in forms." Students practiced sketching and shading various geometric forms and realistic subjects in pencil,crayon and pastel.

Student artists have also started a project related to drawing their hand in an expressive or reflective way. The 8th grade artists were given the opportunity to bring in an object to hold that expresses their likes,interests or personality. In addition, students have the option of incorporating a symbol or a collage element in their work that represents something about their interests or personality.

We have also started to review the relationship of the elements of art to this project.

This is the last week of school for the 7th grade artists before the Thanksgiving break.

The students will be viewing videos on advanced scratchboard technique and pastel drawing. We will discuss the connections in the area of printmaking to the concept of scratchboard.

Next week the 8th grade students will begin the 2nd trimester on December 1st.

This week the 7th grade artists completed their final scatchboard designs which incorporated the elements of texture,line and shape. The theme was nature based and each student was required to use the 3 parts of a landscape in their work to make their images look more realistic and to show linear perspective.

In the foreground,middleground, and background each student used texture to enhance their image and use of linear perspective. Students tried multicolor scratchboard,glitter scratchboard, and stained glass scratchboard to achieve special effects and moods in their work.

This week the 7th grade artists have completed their warm and cool color scheme designs.

Students have learned about analogous color theory and the use of neutral colors in designs. The 7th grade used informal balance in most of their designs.

Sample 7th grade artwork will be displayed in the Lakeview Hallway showcase soon. Some of the sample Lakeview art projects will be displayed on the district website in the near future, as well as on my blog.

This week the 7th grade art students are working on their stylized color scheme designs which are based on geometric shapes and symbolic forms. Students are using three or more cool or warm colors on the color wheel to create analogous color schemes that incorporate one or more neutral colors.

In addition, the 7th grade artists are working with the art elements such as shape,space,and color in conjunction with the important art principles of unity,contrast,rhythm and movement to create exciting works of art in colored markers and colored pencils.

We have also revewed color theory,color mixing techniques,and some design principles to reinforce the concept of good design and a unified work of art.

This week students have finished their still-life drawings. Some sample drawings can be found in the Lakeview hallway showcase which exhibit the color layering technique of shading. Students have also completed a final unit quiz on value ,shading, and geometric solids and shapes.

In addition,we have started a unit on color theory and the color wheel. Students have begun layouts for stylized designs in either a warm or cool color scheme. The 7th grade art students are using overlapping shapes,geometric shapes and stylized forms to create their unique designs.

This week students have continued to create their still-life drawings. Students are learning about the light and shadow system and are including a light source,highlight,shadows,and a cast shadow in their compositions.

Students began this unit with light layout sketches and continued to create final detailed still-life compositions that show a strong focal point and the actual scale of their objects. Also, students are using a full range of values from light to dark to make their subjects look 3-D.

In addition,this week students have practiced their cartooning skills and have worked on quick cartoon images to enhance their drawing ability.

Value and Realism Unit continues

This week 7th grade artists have been working on their still-life compositions. They are using shading techniques,the concept of overlap,texture,value,and realistic color layering techniques to make their forms look 3-D and life-like.

In addition, students have read about a 17th-18th c. Baroque artist named Caravaggio who used dramatic spot lighting to achieve emphasis and a strong focal point in his realistic works.
Also, this week, the 7th grade students have seen a video on the life and work of Cezanne, who was a French post-impressionistic artist who is most known for his fruit still-life paintings. We have explored his relationship to the development of the modern movement in art and modern interpretations of the still-life as an art form.

Students also practiced color layering and shading techniques with crayons this week to be used as an option in individual student projects to show realistic color.

Realism unit continues

Students are currently still working on their realism and still-life unit of study.

For our art history and art appreciation unit this week we have explored the life and work of Post- Impressionsits known as Van Gogh, Cezanne, and Seurat who were part of the pre-modern period of art.

Students have started to practice using some value on their still-life studies.

In the area of realism and art history, students have read about the life and work of the Italian Baroque artist named Caravaggio who worked from the l7th-18th century. Students learned about foreshortening, dramatic lighting, and spotlighting on subjects for emphasis and dominance. These techniques were used by Caravaggio in his realistic works of art during the Baroque period. The 7th grade art students will use this knowledge to enhance their still-life compositions.

Lakeview 7th grade art students have continued their unit on value, realism, and still-life drawing.

During this week, students read about the famous French artist named Cezanne who was a master of the still-life painting in the 19th to 20th century. He is considered the father of modern art in the western world.

Each student has completed a value scale this week that shows a range of values or tones from dark to light. This knowledge of tonal values and shading is integral to the study of realism and the illusion of 3-dimensional forms in a still-life compostion.

This week Lakeview art students have been learning about geometric solids and geometric shapes and how they relate to drawing a realistic still-life.

Students have viewed a video and read material on the life and work of the famous 17th century artist named Rembrandt. Rembrandt was a master of realism and used lighting in an innovative way to highlight his subjects.

Students have also begun exercises in value and shading techniques which will enhance their knowledge of realistic value drawing. In addition, students have reviewed the Principles of Art and how they relate to the study of a still-life composition and works of art.

In the area of community news, the Indian Prairie Library has an exciting art contest opportunity for student artists in grades 7-12th grade in the community. They are looking for original design ideas for the entry way walls for the new teen lounge.

The Element of Line and Modern art

This past week students finalized their contour line shoe drawings. Several 7th grade students also assisted in the matting and preparation of artwork for display.

In the area of art appreciation and art history, the 7th grade art students explored the Pop Art movement of the 1960's with an art video and class discussion. Students learned about the work of pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein who used contour line and everyday objects in their work. Students saw the connection between the use of contour line in advertising art,comic book characters and the work of the Pop Art period. Students used accentuated contour lines that were both thick and thin to create emphasis and drama in their artwork much like these modern pop artists did.

Also, in another way students were also exposed to another 20th century modern Dutch artist named Piet Mondrian who used line in a good part of his later work. Students explored this artist's intense use of line,shape and color through an art video and later class discussion about his work.

7th Grade Drawing unit

This week 7th grade artists have been working on their drawing skills. Students have been busy using their skills of observation and interpretation in a contour line expressive drawing of their shoe.
Each student is using the elements of line, shape,form,color, and texture to create their interpretation of their favorite shoe. Also, some students are adding expressive color effects and personal embellishments to their shoe drawing to give it a sense of their personality and interests.
Samples of these student drawings can be viewed in the Lakeview Jr. High showcases and Lakeview artroom.

7th Grade Drawing Unit begins

In 7th grade art we began our Drawing Unit with quick contour line drawing exercises of the face and human form. We also reviewed the basic elements of art and how they relate to drawing.

This week art students have been reviewing basic simple geometric solids and 3-D forms as they draw with a cartoon video. Students have begun to practice introductory shading techniques on their cartoon drawings.

In addition students began a worksheet on contour line drawing steps. After a review of sketching layout techniques the 7th grade students have begun to draw their own shoes with a focus on line,shape,and form this week in art.

We will be doing many different art activities for the first trimester for the 7th grade. Our focus will be two-dimensional imagery,art appreciation,and art history.

As the art teacher of Lakeview Jr. High, I would like to welcome your child into the art program. My background consists of a Masters Degree in Art Education and a wide range of teaching experience at both the senior and junior high school level.
At Lakeview the sixth grade program is an introductory art program which explores the basic principles and elements of art through a variety of art experiences. These creative experiences and projects include art appreciation and some art history. At times, students may have an opportunity to assist in some school art display work and the presentation of finished artwork.
Student artwork is displayed in the Art Room, in the showcase, and in the Lakeview Junior High Art gallery space in the hallway by the lockers throughout the trimester. In addition digital images of samples of Lakeview student artwork can be found on the Lakeview Jr.High website.
In the seventh and eighth grade, students work on more advanced in-depth projects. These assignments are created in conjunction with the study of art history, famous artists, and art appreciation.

My class requirements include a grading system based upon individual grades for each final project and for some preliminary work. In addition, students receive grades on unit tests,quizes,and worksheets which cover major units of the curriculum and art history. These materials cover basic concepts and vocabulary for each grade level. On occasion, a system of bonus points are added to a student’s average for extra credit or enrichment assignments.

6th grade art closes with scenic landscape watercolors

The 6th grade artists have finished their landscape paintings in the watercolor medium. They have used their knowledge of the color wheel and various watercolor techniques in their artwork.

Also, students have been exposed to the paintings and life of American artist,Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer who were modern artists of the 20th century.

These artists are well known for their paintings and watercolors. Currently, there is beautiful retrospective of their artwork at The Art Institute of Chicago that shows the entire collection of their work.

Also, congratulations to the Class of 2008 as they start a new journey in High School.... Have a wonderful summer and we will see you in the fall in the Art Room.

Color Theory and Watercolor unit continues

This week students have finalized their watercolor color wheel and have learned about primary,secondary,intermediate and neutral colors. We have reviewed color vocabulary and terms,in addition to analogous and complementary color schemes.

Students have begun painting their watercolor landscape painting and have begun to explore various watercolor techniques which were demonstrated in class. The 6th grade artists are using their knowledge of linear perspective and the 3 parts of a landscape to create a realistic landscape or seascape for their watercolor painting. The students are enjoying their final 6th grade painting experience, as they learn to use a theme in their work such as the Illinois state symbols or Illinois scenic landscapes.

Currently the 6th grade artists have begun their color theory and watercolor painting unit.

This week we have explored the color wheel in painting and have worked on an analogous color scheme. The students have learned about the concept of warm and cool color schemes in art and their effect on mood in a work of art.

In addition, we have begun to explore the many exciting watercolor techniques used by professional artists in the field of art. Students have begun to sketch an idea or layout for their landscape painting in the watercolor medium based upon an inspiration source such as the Illinois landscape or a symbol of Illinois.

Perspective and Architecture Unit.

The perspective/architecture unit is soon coming to a close for the 6th grade.

Sample 1 -point perspective drawings can be viewed on my blog today. This week the 6th grade students have been finalizing their 1 pt.perspective drawings in class. Students have used three different values and a cast shadow to delineate the form of a cube.

Also this week as part of our perspective/architecture unit we have explored the work and life of Renaissance artist,Leonardo Da Vinci, who used the light & shadow system and linear perspective.In addition we have reviewed the work of the famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright who began his career in the midwest cities of Oak Park and Chicago for our unit on architecture and perspective.

Also, stop by the Lakeview Jr.High lobby showcase to see some high-contrast student examples of radial design from the 6th grade classes. Soon more student work will be posted on the Lakeview website for viewing and further enjoyment.

Radial Designs finalized and One-Point Perspective unit continues

For this week 6th grade artists were finishing their final radial design projects. In addition, students are mounting their work for display and final review. Soon samples of these designs will be displayed on the Lakeview website and at Lakeview.

Early this week the students viewed a video on Basic Perspective concepts that further explored basic methods of creating one and two point perspective drawings. It also showed how to analyze landscapes and re-interpret them on a two-dimensional surface. This information will be very helpful as we complete our 1 point perspective drawings of a cube under a light source. Also, this perspective exposure will also help students create landscapes and seascapes for our future landscape painting unit.

We are now incorporating vocabulary and shading into our perspective drawings in color so that their look more three-dimensional and realsitic.

Tessellations and Radial Designs

This week the 6th grade artists have explored the concept of tessellations,repeat patterns,and symmetry through an art appreciation video,art books and classroom discussions. We have explored the work of M.C.Escher,graphic artist, and his work with tessellations and unusual repeat images.

Students have also begun to complete their radial designs and a selection of finished student work can be viewed in the Lakeview Jr.High showcase by the Encore classes and lockers.
Later this week will will continue to explore the relationship of color theory to design,pattern,and radial design.

Soon digital images of 8th grade clay sculpture and 6th grade radial designs will be posted on the Lakeview website or Lakeview web gallery for parent and student viewing.

Color Contrast and Symmetry in Radial Designs

The 6th grade art students have begun the enlargement step of their Radial Design.

Students are using two contrasting colors to create a dramatic effect in their design. Students will also be involved in the presentation and preparation of their final work for display. Soon student samples of radial designs will be displayed at Lakeview.

Also, this week we have continued with our art appreciation unit and have seen a very interesting video on the work of the Post-Impressionists who are known as Cezanne,
Van Gogh, and Seurat. In class we discussed their lives and work and their significance to the history of art and the artistic life of the 19th century in Europe.

This was a supplemental addition to our class activities and worksheets on the Elements and Principles of art as they are used in many famous paintings.

Radial Design and Jr.High art contest winner....

This week the 6th grade has continued with their radial design worksheets and have continued with the concept of color contrast,repeat patterns, and symmetrical designs based on the circle motif. Students have been refining their use of the ruler,compass,and have finished their shading or rendering of their preliminary radial designs.

Also, we have continued to explore the relationship of the principles of art to radial designs and to famous works of art in different periods of art history.
We have both discussed and explored visual examples in art class that show principles such as unity,balance,rhythm,emphasis,contrast,movement and pattern.

In another area of art community involvement, Lakeview Jr.High has a winner in the annual Downer's Grove Jr.High Art Contest which is sponsored by the Downers Grove Jr.Women's Club.
Michelle Wrzesinski, an 8th grade artist who is graduating with the class of 2008 this year was selected among many contestants in the area for her pencil rendering.
Congratulations again to Michelle for her creativity and winning pencil drawing!!!

Her work will be professionally exhibited at the Downers Grove Public Library in the month of May for all to view.

6th Grade Radial Design unit continues

This week the 6th grade has started several radial design worksheets. Students have studied the elements of art in conjunction with the design of radial images which are based on symmetry, color contrast, and a repeat patten.

Students have made connections to math in their deeper understanding of the role of symmetry and lines of symmetry to the area of design,graphic design,fabric design and architectural design.

Students have viewed images of Medieval Architecture and have discussed the use of the rose window which is made of stained glass in the Gothic cathedrals and churches of Europe.

Students are currently using rulers and the compass to create a totally unique symmetrical design that will exhibit repeat colors,shapes,and spaces.

The Principles of art such as unity,balance and contrast have been explored and will be stressed further as this unit continues.

New units in Perspective and radial design have begun

This week 6th grade art students have started a new unit of study that has connections to math,science and architecture.

At the start of this week students have begun a 1 point perspective drawing of a cube. All students have reviewed the basic vocabulary used in the creatiion of a 1 pt.perspective drawing which is used by architects ,industrial designers,and interior designers in the business world.
Students have seen connections to these areas through visuals done by professional artists in the field and class discussions. Later in this unit we will explore the historical connections to architecture,history,and scientific inventions.

We have also been exploring the relationship of the Elements and Principles of Art to both perspective drawing and radial design. In the area of radial design we have also begun an introductory worksheet that deals with math concepts of symmetry and repetition. Students have experienced the concept of a radial design and the kaleidoscope effect through the introduction of sample kaleidoscopes in art class which the students enjoyed.
Next week we will further explore the art of radial designs and their connections to math,architecture,history,and science.

Also, all 7th and 8th grade interested students should drop off your 2D or 3D artwork to the artroom on Monday for the exciting community art contest sponsored by the Downers Grove Junior Women's Club which involves the exhibiton of final winners at the Downers Grove Public Library!

Imaginative images from the 6th grade

This week 6th graders are finishing their creativity worksheets. Students are using their knowledge of the elements of art to create an image with a title and theme that incorporates one or more of the elements of art.

Students will also be exploring a computer animation odyssey in film with very creative and imaginative computer generated imagery. This will help students see the connection with careers in computers and animation and drawing and design.

When we return from Spring Break which begins this week students should stop by the art room to pick up entry forms for the Downers Grove Jr.High Art Contest. Remember any 7th or 8th grade interested student at Lakeview Jr. High can submit their 2D or 3D work of art in any media.

This exciting community art contest is sponsored by the Downers Grove Junior Women's Club.

Also, congratulations to 6th grade artist Emily Pikul and 8th grade artist Raven Wilson for their creative interpretations of a Dr.Seuss book and characters! They were the Lakeview winners of the Center Cass District 66 PTO Fund Raiser art contest!!

6th Grade and exciting community and district art contests!!

The 6th grade had a busy week of ISAT testing and also started some new areas in art.
We have been working on drawing and cartooning skills. As part of on going units, the 6th grade has reviewed the basic elements of art and their relationship to a work of art. We have discussed how the elements of art are used in famous master paintings and major works of art.

Several Lakeview 6th and 8th grade students have entered their drawings of Dr. Seuss characters in the PTO Art Contest. Students are awaiting the results of the contest for the Center Cass School District Fund Raiser called Horton Hears a Who! which took place this Sunday.

Also, in the area of new contests in the community the Downers Grove Women's Club has just announced the arrival of the Jr.High Art Contest for 7th and 8th grade art students of District 66 and District 58.

Any 2-D or 3-D work of art is eligible for the contest.
Awards will be presented and winning artwork will be displayed at the Downers Grove Public Library in May.
All artwork from Lakeview Jr. High will be picked up the morning of April 8th.

3rd Trimester Art begins

This week 6th grade art began at the start of the 3rd trimester. Students will be using the elements of art to begin an imaginary drawing of their choice as an intoductory exercise in realism.

This week we will review the elements of art and their use in famous paintings as part of our art appreciation unit. Students will discuss line,shape,color,form,value and texture in major works of art as they learn about some famous major artists in class.

During the later part of the week 6th grade will begin some practice in cartoon drawing and sketching of some basic geometric forms. Students will have several opportunities to explore cartooning in class throughout the semester which is great practice for drawing skills.

Currently in the lobby showcase there are samples of 8th grade Grad cover designs for the
Class of 2008 graduation program competition. The 8th grade art students explored the world of graphic design and advertising for this project and each student had a theme in mind and some students used creative phrases or lines of copy to enhance their concept.

2nd trimester art comes to a close

The 8th grade art studetns have just finished their bas-relief sculptures. Several examples can be viewed in the hallway showcase at Lakeview Jr.High.

During this past week the 8th grade artists learned a little about Impressionism and Post-Impressionism and created a landscape drawing in that style of art.

To close our unit in sculpture and art appreciation, the 8th grade students learned about a very famous 20th century American sculptor named George Segal. This artist is best known for his life-life plaster casts of human forms in everyday situations in life. This artist's works and studio method were explored in class and connections were made to the real world.

The Center Cass School district PTO is sponsoring a fun and exciting art contest !!!!

Any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade interested student can enter their drawing of a Dr.Seuss character or favorite book on approximately 8 " x 11" or larger white board or drawing paper. Stop by the Lakeview art room during the week of March 4,"08 to get more details and to submit your work for the art contest.

Bas-Relief Sculptures in progress

The 8th grade artists have been working on their clay and metal bas-relief sculptures in art. They have explored the concept of projections,recessions, and invented texture to create interest and emphasis their sculptural works of art. Students have also recently seen videos on the concept of throwing on the pottery wheel and other techniques in handbuilt sculpture and three-dimensional art.

In class we have also discussed course options at the high school level that will give 8th grade students further experiences in Sculpture,Ceramics, and Mixed-Media Art. As a result of their sculpture experience,the 8th grade students can now consider further exploration of these additional areas of study as they enter the 9th grade at the Downers Grove South High School or other high school art program.

Soon some additional samples of 8th grade object renderings in pencil will be displayed at Lakeview and on the Lakeview website.

Sculpture unit begins...

This past week 8th grade artists have completed their sculpture drawings and have explored a logo design as part of the graphic design unit in art.

Students created logo color comps or color roughs as graphic designers based on the concept of weather, the seasons, climate change or global warming. Students used a graphic or pictorial symbol,a geometric shape, and a sense of contrast to create their logograms or word pictures.
In addition, students had an opportunity to explain their work based on some of the elements and principles of art and design criteria in class.

Students are now preparing to start their bas- relief sculpture unit in the next weeks.
The 8th grade art students have created colored pencil drawings based on nature inspiration sources such as animals,plants,fish,the weather, and the natural environment.

The concept of bas-relief sculpture can be created in many mediums such as clay,metal,wood and stone and has been used in many forms of art and architecture through many cultures and civilizations.
Students will soon explore the concept of projections,recessions,and texture to create their low-relief sculptural designs with modeling tools.

Class of 2008 Grad cover creations

Students have reached the final stages of their Class of 2008 Grad Cover designs.

The 8th grade have used some of the elements of art such as line,shape,and space and the principles of art such as emphasis,dominance, and contrast. In addition, the students have learned about the need for a visual hook and the use of "breathing space" or negative space to increase the visual impact of their work.

Lakeview artists have also selected different fonts from the computer to coordinate with the mood or feeling of their program cover design. The importance of type or font styles has been introduced and will be further studied next week with connections to the real world of advertising art, marketing and careers in graphic design.

In addition,students have started to create finished color drawings based on the theme of nature,the weather or climate change for their sculpture unit which will be introduced this coming week.

8th grade Grad Cover designs

Lakeview 8th grade art students are working on the final stages of the Graduation Cover Designs for the Class of 2008.

They are moving from pencil roughs to finished black and white final layouts based on contrast and emphasis. Student artists are using pictorial and graphic symbols in the production of their cover design.

In addition,students have viewed a video on Careers in Graphic Arts and have seen the real world application of advertising arts and marketing an idea.

Students are also incorporating their creative use of slogans or a line of copy to reinforce the theme or mood of their cover design. Next week we will continue with the study of typography and the relationship of type to an idea.

Graphic Design and Advertising Art unit begins

This week students began researching images from the internet for inspiration sources for their Grad Cover Designs.

Recently, students have viewed a video on the basic principles of graphic design and advertising art which will be discussed and reviewed in class. Students will explore the use of type in a layout in the near future.

The 8th grade will begin with a pencil layout for the Graduation Cover Design
for the Class of 2008. The varied images from internet research and photos will be incorporated in the development of a concept or theme for this design.

Also, this weekend is the deadline for entering the Darien Women's Club Youth Art Fair which is open to students in the 6th,7th,and 8th grade. Students may enter work in all types of media.

Stop by the artroom by this Friday to pick up an entry form or help with the matting and presentation of your artwork. It should be a great way to show your talent and creativity!

The 8th grade art students have completed their final worksheet on the Object Rendering unit.

Students have briefly been introduced to the area of advertising art and graphic design. Next week we will begin a new unit in graphic design and illustration for reproduction. Lakeview art students will begin a cover design.

This week we have also explored course options in the Art Department at the Downers Grove South High School for next year. Students have many wonderful diverse course options at the high school in the art department to further their creativity.

Students have also been informed about the yearly community art contest sponsored by the Darien Women's Club. Students in grades 6,7,and 8 can enter artwork in any media such as drawing,painting,ceramics,sculpture,mixed-media and photography.

Finalization of Object renderings

The 8th grade art students are in the final stages of their object renderings. Students are also assisting in the matting and presentation of artwork for display.

In the area of art appreciation and career awareness in the arts, we have explored the creative animation of Chuck Jones.

In addition we have been exploring the many course options at the Downers Grove South High School art department and the entry level courses that are open to freshman students.

8th grade realsim unit

For this week 8th grade students have continued working on their object renderings.

In addition,students have completed a reading and discussion on the Baroque artist named Caravaggio who worked and lived in the 17th -18th c.
Caravaggio developed the use of dramatic lighting and spotlighting in his paintings. Also, the artist named Caravaggio used a full range of values in his work and a strong focal point as the students are doing in their object renderings. Students have also seen the connection between the work of Rembrandt and Caravaggio as part of this unit on realism and shading.

Students were reminded that the DGS Art department will be doing a presentation to the 8th grade in January at Lakeview Jr.High regarding the art electives that are available to students.

Realism Unit

This past week the 8th grade art students were continuing with their unit on realism.

Students have reviewed the life and work of Rembrandt who was a 17th century artist from Holland who used dramatic lighting and creative uses of shading in his realistic works of art.

Currently students are continuing with the layout of their object rendering and are exploring a variety of shading techniques to bring out the texture and detail of the object that they will be rendering. In addition during this past week the art students have created a value scale and have reviewed the significance of a full range of values in a realistic work of art.
