Lakeview 8th grade art students are working on the final stages of the Graduation Cover Designs for the Class of 2008.
They are moving from pencil roughs to finished black and white final layouts based on contrast and emphasis. Student artists are using pictorial and graphic symbols in the production of their cover design.
In addition,students have viewed a video on Careers in Graphic Arts and have seen the real world application of advertising arts and marketing an idea.
Students are also incorporating their creative use of slogans or a line of copy to reinforce the theme or mood of their cover design. Next week we will continue with the study of typography and the relationship of type to an idea.

Graphic Design and Advertising Art unit begins
This week students began researching images from the internet for inspiration sources for their Grad Cover Designs.
Recently, students have viewed a video on the basic principles of graphic design and advertising art which will be discussed and reviewed in class. Students will explore the use of type in a layout in the near future.
The 8th grade will begin with a pencil layout for the Graduation Cover Design
for the Class of 2008. The varied images from internet research and photos will be incorporated in the development of a concept or theme for this design.
Also, this weekend is the deadline for entering the Darien Women's Club Youth Art Fair which is open to students in the 6th,7th,and 8th grade. Students may enter work in all types of media.
Stop by the artroom by this Friday to pick up an entry form or help with the matting and presentation of your artwork. It should be a great way to show your talent and creativity!

8th grade unit ends
The 8th grade art students have completed their final worksheet on the Object Rendering unit.
Students have briefly been introduced to the area of advertising art and graphic design. Next week we will begin a new unit in graphic design and illustration for reproduction. Lakeview art students will begin a cover design.
This week we have also explored course options in the Art Department at the Downers Grove South High School for next year. Students have many wonderful diverse course options at the high school in the art department to further their creativity.
Students have also been informed about the yearly community art contest sponsored by the Darien Women's Club. Students in grades 6,7,and 8 can enter artwork in any media such as drawing,painting,ceramics,sculpture,mixed-media and photography.
Please stop by the Lakeview art room to get further information or an entry form since the deadline is approaching very soon for the Creative Youth Art Fair of 2008.

Finalization of Object renderings
The 8th grade art students are in the final stages of their object renderings. Students are also assisting in the matting and presentation of artwork for display.
In the area of art appreciation and career awareness in the arts, we have explored the creative animation of Chuck Jones.
In addition we have been exploring the many course options at the Downers Grove South High School art department and the entry level courses that are open to freshman students.

8th grade realsim unit
For this week 8th grade students have continued working on their object renderings.
In addition,students have completed a reading and discussion on the Baroque artist named Caravaggio who worked and lived in the 17th -18th c.
Caravaggio developed the use of dramatic lighting and spotlighting in his paintings. Also, the artist named Caravaggio used a full range of values in his work and a strong focal point as the students are doing in their object renderings. Students have also seen the connection between the work of Rembrandt and Caravaggio as part of this unit on realism and shading.
Students were reminded that the DGS Art department will be doing a presentation to the 8th grade in January at Lakeview Jr.High regarding the art electives that are available to students.

Realism Unit
This past week the 8th grade art students were continuing with their unit on realism.
Students have reviewed the life and work of Rembrandt who was a 17th century artist from Holland who used dramatic lighting and creative uses of shading in his realistic works of art.
Currently students are continuing with the layout of their object rendering and are exploring a variety of shading techniques to bring out the texture and detail of the object that they will be rendering. In addition during this past week the art students have created a value scale and have reviewed the significance of a full range of values in a realistic work of art.

Reflective Hand Drawing Unit comes to a close
The 8th grade art students have just completed their reflective hand drawings which show value,line,form and texture and may reflect their interests. Sample student drawings are currently displayed in the Lakeview hallway showcase near the art and music wing of the school.
Students are currently selcting interesting object photos from magazines or from digital photos to transpose in the drawing medium with pencil and the optional use of colored pencil.
In this unit the students will explore the techniques used to achieve more photographic realism in their renderings which will be highly finished and more detailed in nature.
